Vegan-Friendly Skincare: What It Really Means & How to Choose Ethical UK Brands

Vegan skincare has become a buzzword, but for many people, it’s still unclear what the label actually guarantees. For us at Oshun Skin, vegan-friendly isn’t a trend — it’s a commitment to transparency, simplicity, and respect for the planet.

What Vegan-Friendly Really Means

Vegan skincare excludes animal-derived ingredients, like beeswax, tallow (derived from beef fat) and carmine(derived from insects). We choose plant-powered ingredients that nourish the skin without relying on animal by-products or harsh synthetics.

Cruelty-Free vs Vegan — Why Both Matter

A product can be vegan but still tested on animals.
A product can be cruelty-free but still contain animal-derived ingredients.
Ethical skincare sits at the intersection of both.

Which is why here at Oshun Skin, we never test on animals and source ALL our ingredients from plants even synthetically.

How to Choose Ethical UK Brands

  • Looking at ingredients

Brands must legally list ingredients using their scientific names. A common misconception is if you cannot pronounce or identify the ingredient then it is harmful. This is misleading. Ingredient lists can be overwhelming but we have provided a plant-derived ingredient list here using their common and scientific (or INCI). That way you can make sure what you’re really putting on your skin without confusion.

  • Avoid vague ‘natural’ claims

Not all natural is created equal. Statements such as ‘clean’, ‘eco-friendly’, even the word ‘natural’ are widely used yet are not standardized definitions. This means brands can use the word without evidence of how much in % is actually natural. For example, a lotion that contains 30% natural ingredients but 70% harsh filler synthetics can use the word ‘natural’. There is no legal requirement of a brand to divulge how much. Avoid brands that use statements without transparent numbers or substantial evidence.

  • Transparency over trends

Where is it made? Choose local production within Europe of transparent global supply chains that are upfront with their sourcing

What happens at end of life? Are you able to repair, refill, give-back or they do offer recycle programs

What materials are used? Look for brands that confirm materials and ingredients using certifications, or small growing businesses that provide clear information on sourcing
