DIY Moringa & Fenugreek Scalp Oil

Hair care doesn’t have to break the bank or leave you guessing what’s in your products. A homemade hair oil with moringa and fenugreek is not only easy to whip up but also brimming with benefits for your scalp and strands. So, grab your apron (or not, no judgment here), and let’s create something simple yet effective for your hair.

Moringa and fenugreek are affordable, versatile, and work beautifully together to care for your hair without any unnecessary extras.

Both ingredients have a long-standing reputation in natural beauty routines:

  • Moringa powder : Packed with vitamins and antioxidants, this powerhouse helps support scalp health and encourages stronger, healthier strands.

  • Fenugreek powder : Known for their rich protein content, fenugreek nourishes hair from root to tip while helping with common concerns like shedding and dryness.

What you'll need :

A fine strainer or cheesecloth

A glass jar or bottle for storage

A jug for double boiling (a term for immersing the ingredients in a bowl or jug for water bath)

Here is my at home recipe to make 300ml which I use a glass dropper jar to contain.

Use the percentages to adjust how much amount in ML you require:

21ml (7%) Moringa powder

21ml (7%) Fenugreek powder

180ml (60%) Sweet Almond Oil

75ml (25%) Castor Oil

3ml (1%) Rosemary Essential Oil (or any of your choice)

How to make your hair oil:

  1. Prep: Set aside your measured ingredients moringa powder and fenugreek powder

  2. Combine and Heat:
In a small saucepan of water, placing the jug within the water gently warm sweet almond oil with the moringa powder and fenugreek powder.  Keep the heat low to avoid damaging the oil properties.

  3. Simmer and Infuse:
Let the mixture simmer for about 10-15 minutes. Stir occasionally and enjoy the earthy aroma

  4. Strain:
Once cooled, strain the oil using a fine strainer or cheesecloth to remove the solids. Blend in a small bowl the strained almond oil powder mixture with castor oil. The heat will gently warm the castor oil.

  5. Cool :

Transfer the oil to a clean glass jar or bottle.

  6. Essential Oil: Finally add the remainder essential oil and stir

How to Use Your DIY Hair Oil:

We find it best to use a glass stopper jar as it allows to distribute the oil evenly throughout your scalp before massaging. Ideal use as a leave in and after wash day care.

A Few Tips for Longevity:

  • Store your oil in a cool, dark place to keep it fresh. This recipe usually lasts about 3-6 months depending on use.

  • Patch test before using if you have a sensitive scalp or any allergies.

  • No Water or Moisture: Ensure the powders are well-strained and the jar is completely dry. Moisture can cause mold or bacteria growth.

  • Smell Test: If the oil starts to smell off or has a cloudy appearance, it’s time to discard it.
